Are You Leading?

Mature leading means staying clear about what matters most. It takes leaders who:

are grounded enough to get out of their own way so that they can fully see their enterprise
and its environment;

can build compelling stories about the future of the organization so that others are moved to
play their part;

see their people as a band of heroes and treat them that way;

are enthusiastically involved in an on-going conversation about what matters to their
organization and sufficiently resilient to admit they don't know all the answers.

Given how rare mature leaders are, it's clear that the prevalent models about leadership don't generate these conditions. The corrosive paradigm of "Peter Pan" leadership is still common: one is young, charismatic, has great adventures, never loses, takes good care of one's "Lost Boys", and is never asked to grow up.

Yet the power of real maturity is more important now than ever.
