About Our Icons

According to Angeles Arien in Signs of Life, there are five symbols that carry universal meaning in the art of peoples throughout the world. These powerful designs provided us with the basis for the images you will find throughout Smart Work™ materials.

The X, or cross, means relationship, a place where paths cross, connection, affiliation. The circle means autonomy, the having of boundaries and independence. We combined these two to signify the power of balancing relationship and autonomy in generating deep commitment.

The triangle or arrowhead, implies goal, target, having an object for one’s hopes and aspirations. Our pyramid represents the power of having clear and compelling outcomes that keep us focused.

The spiral denotes growth, expansion, on-going learning, and the path ahead. For us, this is the journey, the sense of forward motion that serves to highly energize and motivate, and the process that brings us to maturity.

The square illustrates the stability, constancy, firmness, and strength that all human beings need in relationship to one another in order to thrive. Our cube says that without these qualities in our leaders and our workforces, we cannot build lasting results.

"Smart Work™" — engendering the best in and from everyone — requires all these elements in balance with one another.
